    Description

1904 BIOGRAPHY AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE COLORED CITIZENS OF CHATTANOOGA
102 Pages, 8.5 x11 , Full Name Index, Perfect Bound, Reprinted 2004 by Mountain Press, New Condition
The city of Chattanooga, like most southern towns, had both freed blacks and slaves prior to the Civil War. There were a few slaves, that were able to purchase their freedom and became merchants within the city. After the Civil War, the attitude changed quickly and many of the former slaves, came into the culture of the city and became leading citizens in a new southern city filled with many industrialist from the north. This is a small publication that deals with the many achievements of some of these citizens who lead the plight of the blacks into the twentieth century.
    Example
“JOHN G. BONE was born in Madison County, Alabama, in 1867. He was educated at the State Normal and Industrial School. The early part of his life was spent in his native state; he having taught school for eight years. He is a progressive thinker and a logician of brilliant parts. As an orator, he is deep, thoughtful and logical, setting his thoughts as polished gems in the diadem of truth, spanning his master pieces of oratory with a brilliant foray and zones of roseate light that only comes to them who traverse the milky ways of thought with the highest aspirations in the unzooned plentitudes of light. As a writer he is exact, incisive, keen and penetrating, and has a diction more invincible and sharper than a Turkish Scimiter [sic] crossed with a Goliathan Blade of the coldest and keenest steel. He is particularly gifted as an editor, having been editor-in-chief of the Starlight Weekly for sometime before it passed into the hands of the present management. It may be said in truth that he is faithful, true and honest - to know him is to love him. He is an ideal husband and father, a staunch friend, a gentleman and a consistent christian. [sic]”
