    Cherokee was founded in 1971 by James Argyropoulos. With his family including a twin brother Argy had emigrated to Chicago from Greece in 1958 at the age of 14. With orders growing. Argy founded the Cherokee Shoe Co. in 1971 and incorporated two years later. The Cherokee brand, which began as a shoe line in 1973, evolved into a Van Nuys clothing manufacturing company focused on women and juniors sizes. It moved its headquarters two years ago to Sherman Oaks. By the early 1990s, as discount retailers such as Target Corp., Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
