Hello friends,
This is a new Davis Brothers knife, a Custom #2 Chip Carving, Hobby  and Detail Knife. This is one of our medium sized patterns, has a straight edge, and an angled drop to the spine and angled nose.
With this
handle style, made of beautiful Hawaiian Koa, it makes a really attractive combination.
I made this one a little longer than most for those needing a larger knife. This knife was hand forged by a carver, for carvers, right here on the Pacific Northwest Coast.  Davis Bros., well known for high quality hand forged NW Coast style woodcarving tools, will make a limited number of some favorites.  We make a wide selection of Crook or Crooked knives, Detail knives and Hook knives, as well as Chip Carving and Whittling knives.  Detail knives  are used in accompaniment with crook knives, as well as chip carving and other  stock removal knives.
SAFETY FIRST! : This blade is extremely sharp. Please take care when removing from package.  Always be aware of where  you are cutting, and do not put hands, fingers or other parts of your body in the path of the blade.  Always wear a cut-resistant carving glove on the hand not holding the knife.  And please keep this knife safely away from children.
WORKMANSHIP:  Each knife is unique and hand crafted, with no automated processes used in the more than 30 machining, forging and woodworking tasks for each one.  Some very fine tool marks may be visible on the knives. I do not attain absolute machine-like perfection, but strive to combine art, beauty and utility.  The look and feel of this tool when held is beautiful, smooth, and inspires the work at hand.
BLADE: It was made using 1095 high carbon blade steel, ground to shape then forged, refined and hardened.  It  was then tempered to keep a durable, keen edge and is extremely sharp. The blade is 2 3/8" long, with a 2" working edge, and tapers  from 1/2 " over the length of the blade. The blade profile has a straight cutting edge which makes it relatively easy to sharpen. The spine has a taper towards the front that enables finer work.
HANDLE
:
The handle is Hawaiian Koa from a piece obtained from a cabinetmaker friend and used sparingly. This piece has dark brown streaks contrasting with a golden honey colored background and highlighted with iridescent grain. The affect is a beautiful and unusual handle with uncommon interest. This angular handle style complements the blade for a beautiful combination. It is robust enough for hard work while providing a comfortable grip and allowing it to be directed with precision.
It is finished with hand rubbed  natural Shellac and Carnauba wax, a very durable finish  that highlights the beauty of the wood.
CONSTRUCTION:  This knife is 9" overall, with a 2 3/8" long blade, with a 2" cutting edge, and is 1/2" wide before tapering to a point.  The cutting edge is straight, with an angled and tapering spine and
with an angled point.  The blade is set with epoxy and further secured with two bronze rivets.
CARVING CHARACTERISTICS:
This blade is made for creation and cleanup of chip carving work and stop cuts as well as roughing out carvings. It will also work well for details. The straight edge enables precise cuts while incising and slicing, and is superior in making even cuts, like those for notching, joint work, planing, etc. The taper along the back of the blade and angled tip are shaped to allow more downforce to be used . With a double bevel edge, this knife can be used with either hand. The blade has plenty of strength for these tasks, but should not be used for prying to preserve the tip.
