Early days in Columbus, GA, and the five county area of Muscogee, Harris, Talbot, Chattahoochee and Marion, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this spiral-bound booklet, reprinted from two rare books: the Rev. George White's
Historical Collections of Georgia
and
Georgia, a Guide to Its Towns and Countryside
, a WPA publication.  The booklet is printed one-sided on quality paper with the print enlarged for easier reading. A sheet of vinyl protects the 3-color front cover.
The excerpt from White's book covers the development of this area until its publication date of 1854, while excerpts from the WPA book, give a nostalgic glympse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities.
Among the many and diverse topics in the booklet are:
Physical features; the Female Asylum (for orphans); 1850 Census Statistics; The Cotton Gin Factory, Eagle Mills, Rock Island Paper Mill and other businesses; a Legend of "Lover's Leap"; the Muscogee Indian Tribe;  ecomomic growth of Columbus, Transportation and Water Power; Columbus during the Civil War; City Government; Agriculture; 1940 map of the city of Columbus, and Points of Interest including the First National Bank, the Pease House, the Oglethorpe Marker, the Centennial Cotton Gin Plant, the Lummus Cotton Gin Company, the Tom Huston Peanut Company, the County Courthouse with the "brass salute gun", Church Square, the Lion House, the Peabody House, the Mott House, the Fontaine House, and the Columbus Iron Works; a small 1940 mileage map of the state and other bits of history and trivia.
